Description
Magnesium is probably the best-known supplement in the horse world, and not without reason. The mineral is involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including signal transmission between nerves and muscles.
Tension and relaxation
Put simply: calcium makes a muscle contract, magnesium allows that same muscle to relax again afterwards. Without enough magnesium, this interplay works less smoothly. That's why magnesium is often given to horses that tend to hold tension, that are trained intensively, or that stay a bit stiff for longer after exertion.
Why supplement?
In theory, a horse gets its magnesium from forage. In practice, the soil on which grass and hay grow often contains little magnesium, which means the ration can end up lower than expected. Especially in horses with an increased need — due to training, age, pregnancy or a stimulating environment — supplementing is then a logical addition.
Why the citrate form?
Magnesium exists in various compounds, which differ in absorbability. Magnesium citrate is bound to citric acid and is well absorbed by the horse's body. That makes it a good choice for daily, long-term supplementation of the ration. If your horse has a demonstrably strongly increased need, magnesium chelate is an alternative; that form is recognized by the body as an amino acid and absorbed even a bit more readily. Dosage
Mix the powder into the daily feed. Lightly moisten it if needed, so it doesn't blow out of the feed bowl and sticks better to the feed.

FAQ
What's the difference between magnesium citrate and magnesium chelate? Both are well absorbed. Citrate is the standard choice for daily supplementation and offers good value for money. Chelate is recognized by the body as an amino acid and is therefore absorbed even faster; this is especially useful in cases of a demonstrably increased need.
Can I give magnesium all year round? Yes. The need varies per horse and depends on the ration, training, age and living conditions. Many owners give it year-round, others only increase the dose during periods of heavy work or in spring.
My horse is a picky eater. How do I get it in? Build up the dose gradually over a week, mix it into a mash or moistened feed, or add a splash of oil so the powder sticks to the feed pellets.
Can I combine it with other supplements? Usually yes. Magnesium is often combined with products for muscles and joints. Just make sure you're not feeding magnesium from several products at the same time.
